Temples in Baldur's Gate, in addition to providing healing and potion sale services, also give you a way to essentially 'buy' reputation. In return for a lump payment of sufficient magnitude, the church will upgrade your reputation one point. Overpaying sucks, so here is a table to get you paying as little as necessary.

It is not possible to raise your reputation above 18 by donating to the church, so if you plan on executing a crime spree you may want to keep a few sidequests that offer +rep noted, so that you can bump your way back up to a full 20 afterward.
